PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC)

You love scuba diving so much that you want to make it your profession. Great, the best thing to do is to take the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC). With this certificate in your possession, you shouldn’t have any problem to find a job in the scuba diving industry.

Who is eligible to subscribe the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC)? Well everyone who has a PADI Divemaster certificate and has been a certified diver for 6 months. Each participant should have 60 logged dives when starting the course and in order to attend the Instructor Examination (IE) he must have 100 logged dives. You also must be in the possession of the PADI Emergency First Response certificate, Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid) valid within the past 24 months. You also need a medical statement signed by a physician within the last 12 months.

The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is actually the combination of 2 courses: the PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) Course and the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Most of the students complete the entire IDC in one step before they go to attend an PADI Instructor Examination (IE), which is the final step to become a PADI Instructor.

Most of the time the PADI Instructor Development Course is set up in 3 parts, on their turn divided in smaller themes. You will start with a small preparation course, given in one to two days, followed by the actual course taking 5 to 7 days and you finish with the Instructor Examination taking about 2 days.

The PADI Instructor Development Course itself is also divided in 3 parts:

  • Theory in a classroom
  • Skills practicing while scuba diving, swimming and snorkeling in confined water.
  • Skills practicing while scuba diving, swimming and snorkeling in open water.

The key topics of this course include:

  • PADI standards and procedures for courses you can teach with in water workshops.
  • Learning, instructions and the PADI system.
  • Risk management and diver safety.
  • The business of diving and your role as an instructor.
  • Marketing diving and sales counseling.

If you pass the exam, you will become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor that allows you to teach scuba diving up to Divemaster but no scuba diving specialties.

Don’t be mistaken, this is a very intense course that goes on for quite a while. That is why most of the time this course is given in about 2 weeks with some days of rest in between.
